After Steve manages to survive the attempt on his life, criminal head Gordon Shanks decides to kidnap Melissa McGrath, the daughter of Dave McGrath, mission director at Kennedy Space Centre. McGrath is then blackmailed into causing a pre-launch rocket explosion, which injures Steve and causes the mission to be aborted. Torn between saving his daughter and his duty to his friend, McGrath confesses everything to Steve, who realises that the kidnappers will not honour their side of the bargain even though McGrath kept his.
