The Doctor

The TARDIS arrives in Tibet in 1935, and the Doctor visits the nearby Detsen monastery, in order to return a sacred bell that has been in his possession since a previous visit many years ago. He meets the English explorer Travers, who is in the Himalayas searching for the elusive Yeti. The Doctor discovers that the Yeti that they encounter are actually fur-covered robots, directed by an evil cosmic entity, the Great Intelligence, to scare away or kill anyone approaching the monastery. The Intelligence has possessed the body of the monastery's high lama, Padmasambhava, and old friend of the Doctor, and its aim is to create a material body for itself, and to then take control of the planet. The Doctor finds a way to immobilise the yeti, and defeats the Great Intelligence by banishing it to the astral plane. Travers finally discovers a real yeti, a shy and harmless creature, which he chases after as the time travellers leave in their ship.
