Orac’s insatiable curiosity leads him to pilot Liberator into a black hole; the ship appears to be within a void, surrounded by nothing on all sides. Cally hears the voice of the Thaarn, an ancient creature from Auron mythology. Venturing outside, the crew soon realise that they are inside an artificial planet. When their weapons suddenly no longer function, they are captured by the planet’s inhabitants; Avon and Tarrant are put to work by the Caliph, who sets them the task of solving the complex mathematical equations needed to help create a gravity device and energy isolators to further the Thaarn’s scheme to take over the universe. The Thaarn despatches a team of workers to disassemble Liberator for its valuable metals and parts; it then senses Orac’s superior intelligence, believing him to be one of the godlike beings that originally banished it from Auron. When the Thaarn asks Cally to become its companion, she tricks it into deactivating the planet’s energy isolators, thereby allowing their weapons to work again. Together with fellow prisoner Groff, they cause the planet to explode, escaping just in time aboard Liberator. The Thaarn, however, escapes…
