The Terra Nostra is the syndicate that controls all organised crime across the galaxy, and also traffics the illegal drug known as ‘Shadow’. Despite protestations from his crew, Blake decides to enlist the syndicate’s aid in his fight against the tyranny of the Federation, and so takes the Liberator to Space City to meet Largo, the local syndicate leader. When Blake is double-crossed by Largo, he and his crew manage to escape back to Liberator, together with Bek, a thief who tried to rob the syndicate, and his Shadow-addicted sister Hanna. However, upon arriving back aboard Liberator, they find that Cally has fallen into a mysterious catatonic state. Zen informs Blake that Shadow is derived from a cactus commonly known as ‘moon discs’, which grows only on the planet Zondar. Blake decides to set course for Zondar, planning to withhold the supply of moon discs and thereby force the Terra Nostra into co-operating with him. After Blake, Avon and Jenna teleport to the surface and begin to search for the cactus, Cally, her mind controlled by Orac, also arrives on the surface. Orac inexplicably goes out of control, plunging Liberator into the planet’s atmosphere, and killing Hanna when she attempts to deactivate him. Back on Zondar, Cally encounters the moon discs, which somehow break Orac’s influence by strengthening her telepathic abilities; she is able to use her boosted powers to telekinetically switch-off Orac. Later, a restored Orac informs Blake and the crew that he was not responsible for his actions, as he had been taken over by an incorporeal, telepathic being, and that the moon discs are themselves telepathic. Blake also learns the secret behind the Terra Nostra: it is controlled by no less than the president of the Federation…
