Clangers

We consider the darkness of space and the nature of light. We note that the inside of the Clangers' planet is always light, being lit by the little lantern-hives which the Clangers make for the glow-buzzers to make their glow-honey in. Glow-honey is rather delicious Small Clanger climbs up to steal some glow-honey. The glow-buzzers see him and buzz angrily around him and he gives it back. He wonders where they get the nectar to make the honey. The glow-buzzers are flying into and out of a hole near where Grannie Clanger is sitting knitting up some frost wool. Small Clanger follows the glow-buzzers into the hole and through long dark passages to a cove he has never seen before. It is full of large beautiful flowers. He sees a glow-buzzer fly out of one of the flowers. He decides that this is where the glow-honey comes from so he sticks his long nose into the flower. The flower does not like this and swipes him round the ear with a large leaf. Small Clanger apologises. He wanders through the caves of flowers and gets lost. He can't find the way he came in. He meets some glow-buzzers and asks them to show him the way out. They hear what he has to say and then buzz off. Small Clanger is sad. He sits and covers his eyes.

Meanwhile, the glow-buzzers fly out to where Grannie Clanger has fallen asleep with her knitting in her lap. The glow-buzzers pull out the needles and fly away with the wool leaving the knitting to unravel in her lap. They carry the wool to Small Clanger who takes it and follows it to find his way out. He emerges to meet Grannie Clanger who is furious. Small Clanger explains but his explanation does not seem very plausible. Grannie Clanger is angry but the glow-buzzers bring her a little flower and she is happier. She settles down for another nap. The flower sees that she is asleep and walks back into the hole to the flower-cave.
