'Holes' by Daniel Postgate

A mysterious metal box from space lands on the Clangers’ planet. Inside, Small and Tiny find two black cloth circles, which turn out to be holes that lead to each other! The two Clangers experiment with how far the holes can take them, and discover they can go from the surface all the way down to the caves, and even up to the Iron Chicken’s nest…
