The Doctor

The TARDIS lands in Palestine in the 12th Century, where a holy war is in progress between King Richard the Lionheart's forces, and those of the Saracen ruler Saladin. As the travellers are caught up in a Saracen ambush against King Richard and his men, Barbara is kidnapped by the murderous Emir El Akir and taken to the palace of Saladin. The Doctor, Ian and Vicki travel to King Richard's palace in the city of Jaffa, where Ian is knighted by the King; he is given the King's permission to search for Barbara, while the Doctor and Vicki become involved in court politics. Barbara is abducted by El Akir, and taken to his court. King Richard makes plans to marry off his sister, Joanna, to Saphadin, the brother of Saladin, in order to end the war, but Joanna finds out and refuses to comply. The Doctor and Vicki make an enemy of the King's advisor, the Earl of Leicester. Ian is captured by a bandit and staked out in the desert at the mercy of ravenous ants. After outwitting his captor, Ian travels to the court of El Akir, where he is reunited with Barbara, who has been hiding in the villain's harem; one of the girls' fathers kills El Amir, enabling Ian and Barbara to leave for the TARDIS. The Doctor and Vicki also return to the ship, only to be captured by Leicester and his men, and sentenced to death as spies. However, Sir Ian is able to trick Leicester into letting him take custody of the Doctor, enabling the travellers to make their escape in the TARDIS.
