The Doctor

The Doctor and his friends witness a live televised archaeological dig by Professor Horner, as he opens an ancient barrow near the village of Devil's End. The local White Witch warns of impending doom, and the Doctor, alarmed at the events, hurries to the site with Jo. A mysterious force erupts, killing the professor and rendering the Doctor unconscious. When he recovers, the Doctor finds that the Master is posing as the local vicar, the Reverend Magister, and is using black magic rituals to summon Azal, the last of a race known as the Daemons, whose miniaturised spaceship is buried within the barrow. Azal is one of a race of scientists that came to Earth centuries ago, and shaped the development of humanity. Meanwhile, Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates arrive at the village by helicopter, but before the Brigadier and his troops can join them, a heat barrier appears, cutting the village off from the outside world. While the Brigadier and Sergeant Osgood attempt to break through the barrier, villagers, who are working for the Master, capture the Doctor, who tells him that Azal will appear three times, and on the last manifestation, will decide whether to transfer his powers to another, or to destroy the planet, writing it off as a failed experiment. The Master hopes to gains Azal's powers, but in the final ceremony, Azal instead offers them to the Doctor. The Doctor refuses, arguing that the human race should be allowed to develop at it's own pace. Azal decides to destroy the Doctor, but Jo offers up her life in place of his. Such and act of self-sacrifice is incomprehensible to Azal, and he destroys himself. The Master is finally captured by UNIT, and taken away for his crimes against humanity.
