The TARDIS brings the Doctor and his companions to London in 2167, a time when Dalek invaders are now ruling the Earth with the aid of human prisoners that they have converted into mind-controlled Robomen. Susan and Barbara meet a resistance group, led by Dortmun, a crippled wheelchair-bound scientist, while the Doctor and Ian are captured and taken to the Dalek space ship in order to meet the Black Dalek Supreme, who attempts to convert the Doctor into a Roboman. When Dortmun's resistance fighters attack the ship, the Doctor is rescued from being Robotised by David Campbell. But the resistance's bombs are ineffective against the evil metal creatures, and the attack is a disaster. While Ian is forced to hide inside the Dalek ship, the Doctor is reunited with Susan. Together with David and a man named Tyler, he travels to Bedfordshire, the site of a giant mining complex. Barbara and a freedom fighter name Jenny accompany Dortmun to a safe house at the London Transport Museum, but are attacked by Daleks; Dortmun, obsessed with his bombs, blows both himself and the Daleks up. Barbara and Jenny travel in an old van to Bedfordshire, where they meet up with Ian, who has just arrived in the Dalek space ship. They learn that the Daleks are planning to remove the Earth's core with the use of a huge bomb, and then replace it with a drive system, so that they can pilot the planet around the galaxy. Susan and David destroy the Daleks' radio network, freeing the Robomen from their control, and enabling the Doctor to order them to attack the Daleks. Ian manages to deflect the bomb using a barrier in the bomb shaft, and the resulting explosion unleashes a volcanic eruption, which destroys the Daleks. Susan has fallen in love with David, and stays behind with him.
