Tom Campbell, a policeman, is injured when he attempts to stop crooks robbing a jewellery store. Seeing a police box, he staggers inside, only to find himself inside a time and space machine called TARDIS - Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. Its creator, Dr Who, together with his granddaughter Susan and niece Louise, have just set the ship in flight, and they tend to Tom's wounds. TARDIS lands in London, in 2150 AD, at a time when Dalek invaders are now ruling the Earth, with the aid of human prisoners that they have converted into mind-controlled Robomen. Susan and Louise meet a resistance group, led by Dortmun, a crippled scientist, while the Doctor and Tom are captured and taken to the Dalek Saucer, which has landed in Trafalgar Square. The resistance launches a diasterous attack on the saucer - in the chaos, Louise and Tom are left on board. However Dr Who escapes with the aid of David, a resistance fighter, and they head towards Bedfordshire, site of a giant mining complex. The saucer launches and travels to the mine, where Tom and Lousie escape. Dr Who learns that the Daleks are planning to remove the Earth's core with the use of a huge bomb, and then replace it with a drive system, so that they can pilot the planet around the galaxy. Susan and another fighter, Wells, are captured by Daleks and taken to the mine, where they meet up with the others. The Doctor seizes control of the Daleks' radio network, freeing the Robomen from their control, and setting them against their former masters. Tom manages to deflect the bomb using a barrier in the bomb shaft, and the resulting explosion unleashes a volcanic eruption, which destroys the Daleks. Dr Who uses TARDIS to drop Tom off before the jewellry heist occurred, so that he can surprise the crooks before they can begin the robbery.
