'Safe' by Drew Z. Greenberg

The Serenity crew transports a herd of cattle to their prospective buyers, but the deal goes sour when the men haggle over prices; guns are pulled and a fire fight ensues – and Book is caught in the crossfire. When the authorities arrive and take the men away, Mal is left with no money, and a badly wounded crewman. Unfortunately, Simon is unable to help, as he has been kidnapped by people from a nearby town, who need medical help for their sick comrades. In desperation, Mal resorts to contacting the Alliance for help…
