'Shindig' by Jane Espenson

Mal takes Serenity to the planet Persephone, where his old friend Badger offers him a cut on a deal; it seems that a local lord named Warrick Harrow needs to smuggle some property off planet for a sale, but he doesn’t trust Badger to take the goods. Meanwhile, Inara’s latest client, Atherton Wing asks her to accompany him to a lavish and exclusive ball. Accompanied by Kaylee, Mal also attends the event, hoping to meet with Harrow and make the necessary arrangements. However, when Mal sees how Wing is treating Inara he immediately defends her honour – and promptly finds himself committed to a duel to the death with the nobleman, to be held the following morning…
