The Professor installs a new matter compressor in the Planet Express ship, causing it to crash and shatter its cargo of a giant chandelier all over the crew. Leela demands a new, safer ship, but the Professor just storms off to the junk yard to find the smashed remains of his beloved ‘Bessie’, which he rebuilds with scrap metal. While flying the ship home the Professor has a run in with a gang of speed freaks, who laugh at the state of his vessel. When the enrages Professor challenges them to a race the gang readily accept – and then watch in astonishment as the scrap falls off to reveal a sleek racer that easily trounces them, thanks to a new dimension drift device the Professor has installed. Meanwhile, Leela buys a new ship for Planet Express, which is so super-safe it makes all the crew’s missions incredibly boring. Leela takes the ship out for chores and runs into the Professor, now a member of the race gang in New New Jack City; the inevitable argument ensues, and the two former-friends agree to a high-speed race on a giant Möbius Strip track. On the day of the race, Leela, Fry and Bender take the lead – but then the Professor engages the dimension drift drive: the ships to crash head on, sending their occupants into a strange, 2-D universe with no way to escape…
