The Doctor

The TARDIS lands in England during the second Ice Age, in the year 3000AD, and the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria seek refuge in a scientific base. Here, the leader, Clent is attempting to combat the ice barrier with the use of a machine called the Ioniser. One of the scientists, Penley, has discovered a perfectly preserved body embedded in the ice, and he cuts it free and returns with it to the base. It is revealed to be Varga, leader of the Ice Warriors, warlord inhabitants of the planet Mars who visited Earth during the previous Ice Age millions of years ago. Varga is revived, and kidnaps Victoria, and returns to free his crew from the glacier. He learns that his world is now barren, and so plans to conquer the Earth. Clent is unable to use the Ioniser, as he fears that it would cause the spaceship's engines to violently explode. The base computer is unable to give any solution to the situation, and it seems that disaster is imminent. The Doctor manages to save Victoria, and Penley risks activating the Ioniser; there is only a minor explosion, which destroys the warriors' spacecraft, at the same time halting the glacier.
