'Valley of the Shadow' by Robert Sabaroff

When an alien tries to kill a doctor who attempts to examine him, the invader is arrested by the police. David Vincent recognises the alien from a previous encounter, and warns the sheriff that his prisoner will burn up in a matter of days, but his claims are ignored. The alien is sprung from jail by his comrades, but things go wrong and he is killed in the main street - and the entire town see him turn to ash. Pretending to be the air force the aliens take over the town, intending to kill everyone; but Vincent instead convinces them to use a time device…
