The Doctor

The TARDIS has arrived on the beautiful jungle world of Deva Loka; the Doctor leaves Nyssa, suffering from exhaustion, to rest in the ship, while he, Tegan and Adric go exploring. They encounter the three surviving members of a colonisation survey team, whose colleagues have recently vanished under mysterious circumstances. The Doctor and Adric are deemed as suspects by Commander Sanders and Officer Hindle, and are taken as prisoners back to their command dome. The Doctor meets Todd, a scientist, and they discover that the native Kinda are behind the disappearances; the Kinda have been attempting to communicate with the team members, but the experience of the telepathic communion has caused their minds to snap. Meanwhile, Tegan falls asleep by some wind chimes, and her dream state enables her to enter the monochromatic world of an evil entity called the Mara. Here she meets a strange man named Dukkha, who desires to take over her body, and, with the aid of trickery and mind games, confuses her into agreeing to let him possess her. 'Tegan' awakes, and meets Aris, a Kindan male; the force transfers from 'Tegan' to him. Sanders leaves the dome in a Total Survival Suit to look for the missing crewmembers, and he encounters Panna, the Kinda wise woman, and her young acolyte Karuna. She gives him the Box of Jhana, a telepathic communication device, but the experience unhinges his mind. He returns to the base with the mind of a child, and Hindle, now suffering a mental breakdown, seizes control. He forces the Doctor and Todd to open the Box, and they experience visions of the Kinda. The two of them escape, while Hindle coerces Adric into helping him create a model of his own city and population. The Doctor and Todd meet Karuna, just as 'Aris' arrives; the Mara within him has enabled him to speak, fulfilling an ancient prophecy as all Kinda males are mute from birth. Karuna takes the Doctor and Todd to meet Panna, who shows them a vision of the end of everything at the hands of the Mara, and when the two return to reality, they find Panna dead, but reincarnated within Karuna. They find Tegan by the wind chimes, and she awakens unharmed but suffering from bad dreams. While 'Aris' coerces the Kinda to attack the dome, an insane Hindle decides to blow up himself and the dome, in order to protect himself from outside attack. The Doctor manages to stop Hindle by tricking him into opening the Box of Jhana, which restores sanity to his and Sanders's minds. The Doctor uses a circle of mirrors to draw the Mara out of 'Aris', which manifests itself as a gigantic snake. Unable to look at its reflection, the Mara is destroyed by the mirrors. The survey team decide to stay on Deva Loka, recommending to their home world that it is unsuitable for colonisation.
