A new hospital is plagued with mishaps, including the death of two construction workers. When Kolchak attends the grand opening witnesses a power failure, which causes concern for the facility’s administrators. Suspicious, the reporter sneaks down to the basement and finds that despite the air-conditioning, the area is swelteringly hot, and there is extensive damage to the walls. After the building shakes as if in an earthquake, Kolchak tries to question the hospital staff, but they refuse to give anything away. Intrigued, Kolchak teams up with an engineer named Don Kibbey, and together they investigate the hospital; but when the lights blow out and a strange cracking noise begins, Kibbey flees in terror. Kolchak meets Nurse Janice Eisen, who tells him that patients at the hospital are dying from fear. The reporter then visits Jim Elhorn, the man in charge of the Native Americans who built the hospital. The Indian recounts the legend of the Matchemonedo, an ancient Indian bear-god; it seems that the construction of the hospital has awakened the spirit of Matchemonedo from its burial spot beneath Lake Michigan, and the resurrected god is feeding on energy. Learning that Elhorn is a medicine man, Kolchak persuades him to return to the hospital to purge the creature; however, the bear-god then begins to feed off of the radioactive cobalt in the X-Ray room - and with this new source of energy, the Matchemonedo will become an unstoppable force…
