The Doctor

The TARDIS materialises on the planet of the Gonds, a primitive race ruled and taught by a machine called the Dynotrope. They are kept in a life of slavery by the machine's 'gods', the alien Krotons, whose spaceship, the Dynatrope, crash-landed thousands of years ago, after being damaged in a space battle. The Krotons are in suspended animation, in the form of crystalline slurry, waiting for a time when they can be reactivated by the absorption of a sufficient amount of mental energy. Periodically, the two most brilliant Gond students are received into the Dynatrope, supposedly to become the companions of the Krotons, but in truth to have their mental energy drained, and then to be killed. The Doctor and Zoe take the students' tests, and pass - their mental energy is enough to reanimate the Krotons. The Doctor discovers that the Krotons' life system is based on Tellurium, and with help from the Gond scientist Beta, he is able to destroy them and their ship by using an impure form of sulphuric acid.
