'The Monster of Peladon' (6 Parts) Story Code 'YYY' by Brian Hayles

The Doctor and Sarah return to the planet Peladon, fifty years after the Time Lord's previous visit. Queen Thalira, daughter of the late King Peladon, is now regent, and is advised by Chancellor Ortron. The Doctor and Sarah are arrested for trespassing on sacred ground, but Alpha Centauri, who is now the ambassador for the Galactic Federation, clears them of the charges. The planet's miners are in a state of terror, as a spectral image of Aggedor, the royal beast of Peladon, is causing violent deaths in the Trisilicate mines. The miners, led by Gebek, stage an uprising, and Alpha Centauri calls in Federation troops to deal with them. Instead of the real troops, a party of Ice Warriors, led by commander Azaxyr, arrive. The Doctor discovers that the ghostly appearances are actually caused by a matter projector and a directional heat ray, which are being used by an Eckersley, a mining engineer. Eckersley is in league with the Ice Warriors, who are from Galaxy 5, a rogue faction that is currently at war with the Federation, and who are planning to seize the Trisilicate for their own use. Azaxyr attacks the throne room, capturing the Queen and killing Ortron. Whilst the miners attack the Ice Warriors, the Doctor uses the heat ray to destroy those in the throne room. But Eckersley flees with the Queen as his hostage. The Doctor tracks him down with the aid of the real Aggedor, and the sacred creature kills the rogue engineer, but is killed in the skirmish. Galaxy 5 surrenders to the Federation. The Queen asks the Doctor to become her new chancellor, but he declines, suggesting Gebek instead.
