The Doctor

The TARDIS lands on the moon in the year 2070, and the travellers arrive at a weather station. Here they meet Commander Hobson and his deputy, Benoit, who operate the Gravitron, a gravity machine which controls the Earth's weather. The base is beset by problems - a mysterious disease has broken out, there are strange kidnappings and the Graviton keeps losing coordination. The Doctor discovers that the Cybermen have arrived on the moon and are in fact responsible for the disease, and for the malfunctions of the Gravitron. They take control of the kidnapped men, and force them to operate the Graviton, planning to drastically alter the Earth's weather and so destroy the planet. Polly fights back, spraying the Cybermen with fire extinguishers loaded with Cocktail Polly - plastic solvents - but even though the Cybermen are destroyed, the main force is rapidly approaching the moon. The Doctor realises that the Cybermen are susceptible to gravity variations, which is why they have to use humans to operate the Graviton. By deflecting the machine's effects onto the surface of the moon, he sends the Cybermen and their ships shooting off into distant space.
