Back in the Cretaceous Era, Helen is attacked and badly injured by a Pterosaur. In the present, Nick struggles to come to terms with the fact that the A.R.C.’s new Public Relations officer, Jennifer Lewis, looks exactly like Claudia Brown, the woman he loves. James Lester is delighted with Nick’s discovery that the time portals affect radio waves, and he allows Connor to lead the work on building portable anomaly detectors. Hearing a report of strange gas and a possible creature sighting at a high-rise office block, Nick and Jenny set off to investigate. Meanwhile, Stephen returns home to find an injured Helen lying in his bedroom; disregarding her apology for telling Nick they slept together, Stephen dresses Helen’s wounds – whilst ignoring her attempts to seduce him once more. At a video rental shop, Connor meets Caroline, an attractive girl who seems to share his tastes in movies; he brings her back to Abby’s flat to watch a film, but before things can move on, he and Abby are called away to the A.R.C. Nick and Jenny arrive at the evacuated office building, where the fire chief informs them that two of his team are inside looking for the last few workers to leave. While Jenny orders the area to be cleared, Nick and a newly-arrived Stephen enter the building and discover that what was taken for a chemical leak is in fact a prehistoric atmosphere, a mixture of sulphur and carbon dioxide that has leaked in through a portal inside the building. Nick and Stephen find the firewoman, whose partner was killed by a huge, ferocious work-like monster; using a fire-axe Nick fights the creature off, but it dies as soon as it breathes normal air. Sending the firewoman back outside, Nick and Stephen search the worm-filled corridors for the remaining office-workers, but they soon become separated. Back at the A.R.C., Connor is puzzled to see a soldier who looks like the Cleaner he and Abby recently encountered at the shopping centre; but Abby dismisses the idea, and together they head off to find equipment to help disperse the prehistoric gas. Deciding to come in after her colleagues, a Jenny stubbornly ignores Nick’s instructions to take the stairs, and her use of the lift only just fails to crush Stephen, who is making his way up the shaft. ; Stepping out of the lift, Jenny is promptly attacked by a worm, and it is up to an exasperated Nick to save her – and when he in turn is attacked by another monster, Jenny returns the favour. Realising Jenny is nothing like his version of Claudia, Nick grudgingly allows her to accompany him; they soon are joined by Connor and Abby, who use leaf-blowers to disperse the gas, enabling them to locate the trapped office workers. Elsewhere, Stephen finds himself trapped in an office filled with gas – just as several more of the giant worms appear and come straight for him…
