When Number 6 and Number 24, a girl named Alison, discover that they share a telepathic link, they begin practicing a mind-reading act. Meanwhile, the latest Number 2 puts his new plan into operation; Number 6 awakes one morning to find himself in a different house, has somehow grown a moustache overnight, and is now left-handed. It seems that he is actually the newly-arrived Number 12, an agent called in by Number 2 as part of a scheme to drive the <I>real</I> Number 6 out of his mind…
