'Marshall and Snellgrove' by Charlie Higson

Jeff and Jeannie are hired by Meredith Hortweldine, who believes that his twin brother, Jasper, is plotting to kill him over their inheritance, following the suspicious death of their father, freezer magnate Leslie Hortweldine. However, when Jeff and Jeannie arrive at the Hortweldine house, they discover that Jasper has hired their arch-rivals Charley Marshall and Sebastian Snellgrove - another firm of private detectives that use the offices below theirs – because he believes that his life is under threat from Meredith. Meanwhile, in the afterlife, Marty learns from Wyvern that his return to Earth was down to a mix-up, and that one Martin Hopkirk was to have been the correct choice. Jeff suspects that Jasper is planning something, but before he can act a bomb explodes in the house, killing both Meredith and Sebastian. As the plot thickens, Mrs Celia Proffitt prepares to read the will, the Hortweldine family tree reveals a long-buried secret, and soon Marty is not the only ghost to make an appearance…
