The TARDIS materialises aboard a gigantic spaceship from 28th century Earth, which is orbiting around a planet called The Sense-Sphere. After the Doctor and his companions find the crew in a state of semi-permanent paralysis, the lock to the TARDIS mysteriously vanishes. The crew reawaken, and the captain, Maitland, explains that the occupants of the planet, the telepathic Sensorites, are holding them prisoner. Two Sensorite leaders communicate with Susan, and invite her, the Doctor, Ian and two crewmembers, Carol and John, down to the surface. Arriving on Sense-Sphere, the party are told by the First Elder and the Second Elder that the Sensorites fear the exploitation of their mineral-rich planet, and are slowly dying from an illness that resulted soon after a previous Earth expedition left them. The Doctor finds a cure, and traces the cause back some underground caves, where three deranged survivors of the previous expedition have added deadly nightshade to the water supply.

*'The Unwilling Warriors' was transmitted approx 25 minutes late, as the tennis transmitted before it overran. There was also a one week break between Eps 2 and 3, due to 'Grandstand' extending to cover tennis and cricket; this is the only time in the series' history that a break occurred mid-story.
