'Something of Value' by Terry Nation

Greg, John and Lizzie are out fishing when they meet a traveller named Robert Lawson. They invite him back to the manor house, where he tells everyone that he has been wandering the country looking for a suitable community to join. That night, a heavy storm breaks out; while everyone sleeps, Lawson sneaks around the house taking stock of supplies, noting in particular the tanker full of petrol. The next morning, Greg and Abby are horrified to discover that the rain has flooded the cellar, ruining the community's precious provisions. Hoping to trade their petrol for supplies at the neighbouring settlement of Little Barton, Greg leaves in the tanker, accompanied by Abby in another car. Meanwhile, Lawson returns to his associates, Buckmaster and Thorpe, and together they decide to mount a raid on the community. Armed with shotguns they surprise Abby and the others and demand that the petrol tanker be handed over to them. Learning that Greg has left with the fuel, the men threaten John and Lizzie in order to persuade Abby to reveal Greg's destination. Meanwhile, Greg has been forced off the road due to break failiure; he and Abby attempt to repair the tanker - unaware that Lawson and the others are not far behind...
