'Sparks' by Roger Parkes

Charles and the others are searching for Alec Campbell, an electrical engineer. They stop off at a nearby community based in a church, and learn that Campbell, nicknamed Sparks, is wracked with guilt after he abandoned his wife and children when they caught the plague, and he now lives a solitary life in squalor, refusing to talk to anyone.
