It is the year 2065. Retired astronaut and billionaire industrialist Jeff Tracy has just completed the formation of International Rescue, an organisation dedicated to saving the lives of accident victims after conventional rescue attempts have failed. Using the technologically advanced Thunderbirds, fantastic rescue vehicles piloted by his sons Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon and John, and designed by scientific genius Brains, Jeff co-ordinates operations from a secret base located on a volcanic island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. When the villainous criminal known as The Hood hatches a scheme to photograph the Thunderbird vehicles, he places a bomb in the landing gear of the Fireflash, an atomic-powered airliner. Unable to land, the crew of the Fireflash realise that if the aircraft stays in the air for more than two hours, they and the passengers will receive fatal doses of radiation. Hearing of the dilemma, Jeff Tracy despatches his sons on their very first mission - but will they be able thwart The Hood's devious plans and to save the airliner in time?
