'The Defector' by Judith Berg and Sandra Berg

An alien scientist named Kemo develops a weapon capable of interfacing with the human ‘Grapevine’ computer network. However, when he uses the device to intercept a conversation between Kincaid and a dealer named ‘Ace’ it inadvertently causes an energy surge, creating a link between Kemo and Ace that causes them to merge minds: the resultant feedback kills Ace instantly, and leaves Kemo scarred both physically and mentally. When the Eternal Spirit of Morthrai condemns the now-impure Kemo to death, the scientist escapes from his people’s base and goes on the run, taking with him a key component of the weapon. Concerned by Ace’s radio silence, Kincaid attempts to track down his friend with the aid of the other ‘Grapevine’ contacts; after a difficult search he manages to locate Ace’s hideout, where he finds his friend’s corpse and also Kemo, who has been instinctively drawn there; to Kincaid’s surprise, Kemo offers to help him defeat his fellow Morthren. Meanwhile, the alien invaders have managed to gain some control of the weapon, which they use to kill the remaining Grapevine users one by one…
